My two Toshiba 2595XDVD laptops ('99 era) have a hotkey to turn off the
screen too. I believe you can type without waking up the screen too.
That was nice. Although those Celeron 400MHz with 192MB of RAM max are
just too slow for my needs nowadays. Although netbooks are not. Neither
are my Gateways.

I do have screen off utilities for my netbooks and Gateways. Although
they will wakeup when you press any key.

On my XP powered EeePc (1000HD) I set the Power Options (in Control
Panel) for 'Do Nothing' when the lid closes. (The screen will now turn
off when the lid closes without shutting down the Eee.) I find this
handy for listening to mp3s as I just close the lid to turn off the
screen. Also this makes for easier carrying while listening.

For adjustments I just open the lid and the screen lights, then close
it again and off it goes. Very easy system.

Course when you want to turn the Eee completely off (or hibernate) you
gotta remember to use the on/off button (and not just close the lid)
or the next time you try to use it the battery life will be
drastically short... ;)

Yes I do this sometimes and I don't leave the lid closed too long while
the laptop/netbook is still running. The reason is I noticed a closed
lid, causes the computer to get warmer. You can see this from CPU and
hard drive temp utilities too.

The one laptop that I am most interested in turning off the screen is
one of my Gateway MX6124. This one was purchased refurbished from
TigerDirect. And it works great, except the lid switch never worked. I
have a spare that I have in pieces for spare parts and that one the lid
switch does work.

My five EeePC I am not too worried about having the screen lit all of
the time. As they use LEDs instead of florescent lamps. Which has a far

I'm playing around with the idea of using my MP3 players to play the
podcasts hooked up to a FM transmitter. Works well, but I have to move
the files there everyday. Change batteries a lot (I use rechargeables).
Sometimes it seems easier just to run them from the computer anyway.

On my Eees that would be because the heat sync is directly below the
keyboard and loses some ventilation with the lid closed. But I notice no
fan increase so it must not be too bad.

I wasn't worried about screen life, I did it because it was easier to carry
the Eee closed when listening to audio.

I use an FM transmitter hooked to my Eee 2G Surf while streaming live radio.
It's easier to carry a small FM radio around when doing yard work than the
Eee... ;)

I remember an interview with Asus early on that they were quite proud
that they used the keyboard as part of the heat sink. And I can feel
heat coming out of the keyboard too. Although I will do more tests with
the lid closed. Although the speakers are next to the screen in the top
half. So it doesn't sound as good with the lid closed.

The fan is on the bottom of the motherboard (on the 700 series anyway)
and it doesn't help the topside with all of the chips on it (and the
heat sink). It mostly helps just the RAM, SSD, and the WiFi. Running it
manually and at full blast, it can cool the top of the motherboard a
little though.

Yes so true. I am not worried about the EeePCs so much, but one of my
Gateways.

Yes excellent idea. ;-)
