Could someone really smart and/or really informed publish some hints to
solving what so many users of WDS complain about: Why can't WDS find
anything on my computer?

I have more and more users complaining about this and I see it in this NG as
well. WDS reports tens of thousands of indexed items, but finds nothing when
the user searches.

Thanks.

Hi Rolf,

You may want to look at some of the resources online either the admin guide
or the troubleshooting guide as they list a lot of fixes and potential
pitfalls.

You can find them at:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows/search/dtsguide.mspx#top
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows/search/dtstshoot.mspx

Normally the first troubleshooting steps are:
1A) Investigate the Error Message
1B) If no Error Message Check your settings, are you indexing what you are
searching for? Is Outlook open when you try to index Email, are the items
you are searching for included in the don't index these extentions list,
have you selected the drive/share/folder you are trying to search in
indexing options/browse, is there a group policy stopping you from indexing
what you are trying to index etc.
1C) If no Error Message and your settings are correct, ensure you have the
latest version or Service Pack.

But that's just how I do things. :)

hth,

Jeff

Checked all that. There is no errormsg. In fact, everything looks fine
except no search results. On my computer indexing status reports ~27000
indexed items. I have checked that locations are correct.

WDS worked fine for a while, but one day it stopped working. I wish I paid
more attention to what happened with the computer at the time. It could be a
patch/hotfix or other software that is the culprit.

Thanks, though.

Have you tried the solution that solved exactly the same problem for me?
(http://groups.google.ch/group/microsoft.public.msn.search/browse_frm/thread/ade72ad26a588c5e/f416a7945d8e12de?lnk=st&q=%22franz+Schenk%22+%22Have+then+reinstalled+Windows+XP+SP2%22&rnum=1&hl=de#f416a7945d8e12de)

Wonder if others have the same problem.
