Hello.

Does anyone know if this computer will support one of the newer Hitache
7k100 drives? I'm looking at an 80gb or 100gb 7200 RPM drive.

I ask because the drive says its interface is "ATA-6" and the laptop is
"ATA-4." However, I thought that an ATA-6 drive would be backward
compatible.

Thanks.

A newer drive will default to the maximum transfer rate that the
notebook will support. In reality, the max ATA rate is achieved only in
burst mode for reading from the drive's internal cache; the sustained
transfer rate is limited by the PCI bus speed on the mainboard for a
fast drive or the drive read rate on a slow drive. This suggests that
there might not be much, if any, benefit of a 7200rpm drive compared to
an equivalent, less expensive, 5400rpm drive on an older notebook at
ATA-4. One of www.anandtech.com or www.tomshardware.com did a review of
the Hitachi 7K60 notebook drive when it became available that might help
you with this question. As I recall, the review suggested that a 7200rpm
drive on my notebook supporting ATA-5 was only incrementally faster in
real life than a 5400rpm drive (ie, not worth the additional cost). I
went with the Hitachi 7K60 anyway.

The interface is backwards compatible, the more relevant question
concerns capacity, for which there is no good answer other than trying
it or knowing the outcome of someone else's trial.

Thanks for the replies.

I ended up going with the Hitachi anyway. I can always pull it out and
put it in another laptop if it comes to that..
