I'm running Win98 on a Toshiba Tecra 8000, using the internal modem
for dial-up. After a couple of years of no problems, Windows is
suddenly "losing" the modem driver every time I shut down the
computer, and I have to reinstall before I can go online. Any idea
what's going on here - Windows issues or is the modem going bad?

Sounds like a windows problem; if the modem was going, it wouldn't be
fixed with a driver.

Even if a PC Card modem works with no problem? I've wondered about
reinstalling DUN (Dial-up Networking), but if it can use the Zoom card
with no problems, not sure if that's it. (Unfortunately, the Zoom
doesn't get as fast of a connection as the internal, or I'd just keep
using it.)

Win98 has a habit of becoming confused with its installed devices. On
of the "tricks" is to boot into Safe Mode/access Device Manager/Show
hidden devices, and remove all of the excess instances of the device in
question, leaving only the first in the list. Sometimes removing all of
the devices is a better choice, allowing a fresh install of the driver.

I tried that and it looked at first like that might do it. But the
next time Windows booted, it had lost the modem driver again. Thanks,
anyway.

The modem must be toast.
