I've just bought my first laptop which has Vista Home Basic & 2GB of
RAM. According to the sales literature the battery life ought to be
2.5hrs but I barely get an hour out of a fully charged battery, even
with the wifi turned off and the screen brightness turned down. With
wifi on I'm lucky to get 45 mins. The battery model # is PA3450U-1BRS
& is allegedly 2000mAh. Is this par for the course or is it likely
that I have a faulty battery?

It might be that the 2Kmah battery is not the one that was benchmarked.
3K-4Kmah batteries are common and that might have been an additional
charge option.

OTOH, if Vista has the equivalent of Disk Indexing that can be turned
off, the HD power consumption for this service might be the sourced of
the off-performance.

It's up to the manufacturer to test in whatever manner they see fit. In the
case of Toshiba, they test with wireless turned off, the screen set to 30%
brightness, all non-essential processes stopped, and with the computer set
to stand-by after 15 minutes.

You are lucky getting what you do.

I dunno, they ALL seem to run two hours, it's the norm! The laptop I
bought twenty years ago ran two hours.
Yours doesn't sound right.
