The battery LED has started to continuously flash amber slowly, it now
never reverts to green.

The machine is generally used connected to the mains and functions
perfectly when connected to a mains supply. The manual indicates that
the battery LED flashing amber indicates battery power less than 10%.

As the laptop is now about four years old I think the flashing amber
indicates the battery has come to the end of its life. Will someone
confirm whether this is what the battery LED indicates when
continuously flashing amber.

Googling gives very unclear advice ranging from faulty video to a
failed connection neither of which appear to fit my case. Advice from
experience will be appreciated.

Leaving a battery in the computer when it's operated continuously on AC
power will generally destroy the battery over a period of 6 months to 2
years. This sounds like what you have done. When you go to buy a new
battery, you may be shocked at the price (could be as high as $250). IF
you get a new battery, don't leave it installed in the machine when you
are plugged in for long periods of time (days or more). If you want the
UPS functionality that the battery provides, an inexpensive 300 to 350VA
UPS for $30 is a lot cheaper solution than a $250 battery.
