Toshiba Satellite 2805-S202 fails to boot sometimes johnmarkos 07-03-2006

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2805-S202, which I purchased in August,
2001. Until recently it was running Windows XP (upgraded from the
original Windows ME). It's now running Ubuntu Dapper Drake (lovely
system, BTW). Occasionally, I will attempt to boot the machine up and
it will stop early in the boot sequence. Some text shows on the screen
but it halts very soon after "OK, booting the kernel." If I go away
and leave it for a few days, it will usually boot up just fine. When
this error is occurring, it will not boot with a rescue CD either.

It was a very trusty system until early this year (2006). The problem
started happening when Windows was still installed on it. Oh, I should
also mention that the LCD on the laptop is fried so I'm using an
external monitor. :)

Anyone have any thoughts on what might be wrong with this machine and
on how I might be able to diagnose the problem better? It's a
non-essential computer for me so I'm really asking more out of
curiosity than anything else.

Thanks for your help!

The heatsink and fan are probably clogged with dirt and dust and need a
good cleaning out. On this model, remove the keyboard (trim strip above
it just "snaps" out, then remove the keyboard with 2 or 3 screws that
will be obvious). use a can of compressed air to clean as much as you can.

A TRULY complete cleaning may require splitting the case and removing
the top half of the laptop (not too bad if you have the service manual,
quite difficult without one).

Warning: this model uses a thermal pad instead of heat sink compound for
the heat-sink to CPU coupling, and you CANNOT substitute thermal grease
(the cooling system design presumes a pad with a significant thickness,
and there won't be intimate contact between the CPU and the heatsink
without the thickness of the pad). The pad is often not removeable if
the heatsink is removed, so unless you have a spare pad, don't remove
the heatsink from the CPU.

Next, use Memtest or Memtest86 to test the system memory. It has to
have ZERO errors.

Finally, test the hard drive completely.

That's probably about the extent of what you can do.

I have had several 2805's. One error I found in common is that the
additional RAM plug in strip seems to fail. Most times it simply fails to
recognize the RAM that is added. Other times you get the same symptom you
are describing. Try removing any additonal RAM and see if the symptom goes
away.
