The "plugged in" light stays on, but the battery charge light goes out and
it runs on battery. I have to shutdown, unplug the cord, plug it back in
and it acts normal for another period of time. then does it again. Got any
ideas?

thanks

1. the wall plug is not completely inserted into the wall socket.

2. the wall to transformer plug is not completely inserted into the
transformer.

3. the transformer to computer plug is not completely inserted.

It's getting the power, it's not using it properly.

4. The connector on the motherboard is no longer working properly due
to a damaged connector or damaged connection to the motherboard.

In over 10 years of working on notebook computers I have found #4 to
be the most common cause of the OP's symptoms. In very rare occasions
it's been caused by a bad battery or a bad connection between the
battery and the motherboard.

PS: To the OP, S-611 doesn't give a clue as to what model of Toshiba
you have. The model or part number is normally in the format of
XYYY-SZZZ such as A123-S123. It's the first part that determines the
base model number. The second part after the "S" indicates
configuration options and the same "S" number may be used on widely
different models.

Thanks for your useful reply . It's a satellite P35-s611

And the cord has been abused and yanked on many times. it even got chopped
in half once in the recliner. <g>
