 My girlfriend changed the display on her used 430 to 24-bit color (I
don't know why). It is now blank, except when it's first turned on. At
that point it shows the line or two of text and then the Windows 98
banner.

The screen lightens a bit when I hit the screen display using the
function key. There is a line of dim color bits about 1" high running
across the top of the screen.

I've connected it to two external displays. Neither worked. I
downloaded the screen drivers from Toshiba, but can't use them because
nothing appears on the screen.

So, what's my next step? How can I get her back to computerdom?

How did she do this? Did she take out a screwdriver and physically
change the LCD? If so, she probably connected it back up wrong.

OTOH, if you are only talking about ms windows and its settings, you
will have to set them back to normal. Boot in rescue mode.
