I have outlook express now for mail and news. I want to keep OE for mail and
really
only want a better newsreader so I can block google group posts.

But only if she wants to add a local server/proxy to filter the GG posts
she want to be rid of. Like her OE, [F]A can't filter on the Message-ID
header that that filtering requires, so other software to do the filtering
is required between the remote server and the local client.

No, filtering on "gmail" in the From header is *not* a GG filter. It's a
fallback for people who can't filter on the *real* GG criteria --
"googlegroups" in the Message-ID header.

I think it's a pretty reasonable fallback because of how much of the GG
spam also has gmail return addresses.
