Tips on a new laptop? Lappy 09-20-2005

I am currently in the market for a new laptop, and am hoping someone
has some good tips on which brand/type to get.

The top priority is: It must be silent! I have been using an old
Toshiba Satellite for far too long now, and from the very day I got it,
the noise it makes has been driving me crazy.

It must also be fairly light to carry, as I have to take it up and down
to the university every day. I am thinking around 2 kg (about 4 1/2
pounds), definitely not as much as 3 kg (6 1/2 pounds).

It must also have a good keyboard, I write a lot. And the battery life
must be decent, too.

I would prefer a larger screen than 12" - I don't really need an
ultra-portable, most of them are too pricey anyway. The price should be
around $1500 (€1250). I could consider going up to around $2500
(€2000), but as I don't have all that big demands for computing power
and such, I don't suppose that would be necessary.

I would like a laptop that looks good, though.

So, any hot tips?

Sometimes that can depend on the hard drive in the laptop, not the laptop
itself.

Then you're talking ultraportable.

The only laptops with good keyboards are ThinkPads and Powerbooks. So your
choice is pretty limited (or pretty easy, depending how you look at that).

Have a look at the sony vaio ultra portables, the keyboards are nice, and
some of the have up to 4hrs battery power. You will have to sacrifice screen
size though.. (either 13,3" or 14") anything bigger means more weight.
The B series are nice, 14" and weigh 2,3kg.. so still acceptable for nomadic
uses..

The S series have 13,3" screens, but are v.nice quality.

And they are just under 2kg (1,95kg)

And you can't fault the looks of the vaios.. IMHO:)

(I'm currently looking for the same sort of specs.)
