Has anyone tried the time sync programs listed on the nist sites? I
would like to resync more frequently than 1/week.

My MCE can/will vary from 2 min early to 2 min late over a day or 2.
With the cable channels skewing their times, and my MCE doing it too, I
have to record over 5 min before and after to make sure I get the
beginning/end of a show... I shut the system down for two days after
syncing it, and when I booted it the BIOS clock was still OK.

My router can be configured as a NTP server, with updates from a nist
server (or I could set it up on my Unix box). The MCE will not accept
time from anything other than the windows time site. The nist or any
other site just error, and you can't change the update frequency to less
than a week anyway. My XP will connect to anything I give it, but still
has a 1 week resync. Both systems are configured the same except for the
IP's.

It would be a no-brainer to install other software, except my XP Pro
keeps good time, it is the MCE I don't want to screw up (more than it is!).

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient

Locate the SpecialPollInterval value in the right pane. Double click it.
Select the Decimal radio button and enter the time between updates, in
seconds (3600 = 1 hour). Then click Start, Run and enter

NET STOP W32TIME

Then Start, Run and enter

NET START W32TIME

You may also want to change the time provider to time-b.nist.gov. I've
found it to be the most reliable.

If manually modifying the Registry isn't to your liking, see
www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities,Change Internet Update Time Interval.
You'll still need to stop/start the W32TIME service, or reboot.
