I just got the new AT&T Tilt smartphone, and I'm really happy with it.
Any idea why the soft reset takes so long?

Thanks!
Scott

The Tilt isn't actually a Smartphone. That designation is reserved for
devices without a touchscreen. You could call it a PocketPC Phone Edition.
or just a Pocket PC (since there are few left without phones), or a Windows
Mobile Professional Device. The latter is the official name these days. Just
rolls of the tongue doesn't it? ;)

Is this your first device of this sort, I mean with phone? I don't think it
takes any longer to boot ( soft reset) than any other device of this sort. I
grant it takes a while, but it is fairly normal. I rarely have to soft reset
mine, or turn it off. For airlines and stuff I just turn of the radios.

Sven,

I've owned an iPaq 4155 PDA (Pocket PC 2003) for several years. The soft reset
on it takes 10 seconds. A soft reset on the Tilt takes 40-seconds...a big
difference.
When I use Sprite backup, it soft resets once in the beginning and once
afterwards.

OK, significantly different devices. I had a 4155 back in the day
two...still have it actually. The newer devices with persistant memory take
longer to boot in the first place, and in my experience those with phones a
bit longer yet. Just the nature of the advances in technology ;)

Keep in mind you may want to reconsider your backup concept. On the 4155 if
you let the battery drain, you lost everything and had to resort to a backup
to restore all your programs, settings, etc. Back then I back'd up
automatically about once a day myself.

With the persistant memory of the new devices, including your Tilt, they
don't lose anything even if you take the battery out and leave it out for a
month. It's like a USB drive. I don't really find the need to back up very
often. All my PIM info is stored on the PC anyway in Outlook, I don't lose
any programs or settings on a drained battery, and of course the flash
memory cards were never a problem. I back-up maybe once a week, just to
hedge against disasters, or rougue programs.

Sven.

OK, thanks for the updated information on the Tilt. It's good to know that
it has persistent memory. I guess I'm in the habit of backing everything up
to the micro SD card every week or so. The main reason is in case the phone
is lost. I have a copy on my laptop of everything on my SD card, so I can
restore it all to a new phone, if necessary.
