Dell Latitude C 500, I notice three small lights just to the right of
the power button. I have tried to find a manual that mentions these
without luck. There are small icons beside each that look like locks
with figures in them, the left one has a "9" the center has an "A" and
the right has a down arrow. Can anyone tell me what these indicate.
Many thanks...

These are:

. Numeric lock. The keys M, J, K, L, U, I, O (and 7, 8 and 9) have lightly
printed numbers on them. Pressing the NumLk button turns on this light and
activates the keyboard to be in "numeric keypad" mode, where the
aforementioned keys work as numbers instead of letters. This is useful when
working in spreadsheets and other applications where you are typing lots of
numbers (think of like an adding machine).

. Caps Lock. Pressing the Caps Lock key turns on this light. This is
useful when you WANT TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS, without holding the shift key.

. Scroll Lock. Pressing the Fn key and the ScrLk key at the same time
activates this light. This is useful in applications that show a scrolling
window of text or other information, to temporarily hold this area for
viewing.

Thank you Jef for explaining that. The only other quick question is
what is the button to the right of the power switch used for. Doesn't
seem to do much when I press it. Thanks...

In the users manual it says it's the Dell AccessDirect key.

This key appears to be user-programmable and is used to launch a frequently
used program, such as Internet Explorer.

Unfortunately I don't have a Dell computer nearby (even one without the Dell
AccessDirect key) to play with. Hopefully someone will happen along who
knows how and where this is set up. In the meantime, perhaps there's some
mention of how it's programmed in your users guide.
