I'm thinking of upgrading my 5 year old Thinkpad T20.
It's been a great machine and I really like it, but
I'm missing having a burner (which I plan to use for
backups) and would also like to have the newer ports
such as USB 2.0.

Initially I thought of just going with the T43 since I
really like the keyboard and also I'm hooked on the
trackpoint mouse. However, the reviews for the T43
on http://forums.thinkpad.com have been less than
encouraging. It's hard to find reviews by users that
aren't complaining about quality issues (noise, general
assembly issues, heat...). Has anyone bought a T43
recently and are happy with it?

If not a T43, what else might I look at. I'm looking
for something light (under 5 lb) with very good build
quality and 14" screen. I don't mind sacrificing performance
and paying a slightly higher price for quality.

In some other articles on this group, someone recommended
the Panasonic machines. Their website lists a machine that
that looks really nice, but at $3000 they are quite pricey.
The IBM with a 3 year warranty would be about $2200-$2400
and would have a much better chipset. Are there any stores
that stock the Panasonics so I can take a look to decide
whether I like the build quality? If anyone has used
both an IBM T series and the Panansonic, how would you
compare them with respect to build quality, especially
the keyboard?

I just bought a USB 2.0 Cardbus card for my A20p for $36. USB 2.0
makes external burners work well enough that if you just want it for
backups, an internal burner isn't that useful.

I'm surprised to hear this. I have an X40 which came out about the
same time and I'd expect it's built about the same way, and it's fine.
If I wanted another full sized, full featured laptop I'd certainly
try to get a T42 or T43. But I find after years of using huge laptops
(770 and then A20p) I really like the tiny X40.

Why go for the T43? T42 is a great choice, since it is slowly being
"phased out", ehich means better prices. In terms of performance, it is
on par with (if not better than) the T43, and suffers none of the
mentioned problems. If you can get a 14" one with a SXGA+ screen go for
it, it is IMO the best laptop in the world in terms of
portability/usabability. Between many Thinkpads, I have the T42 2378-FVU
machine, (includinf an 1.7 P-M, 1 gig RAM, 60g 7200 HD, SXGA+ screen and
ATI 9600) and it has long replaced all the others in terms of being my
main machine. An X series (like my X31) is always nice for the road
warriors, but the T42 has it all in one package.

Per the Thinkpad website, it looks like none of the available T42's
come with an SXGA+ display. Further, adding a multi-burner drive
pushes the price into T43 territory, and yet the T42 has a lower
FSB speed (400 MHz Vs. 533 MHz for the T43). Hence my reservation
with getting a T42.

Also the fact that you won't be able to upgrade the internal hdd of the T43
to anything except an IBM-supplied unit is a bit of a show stopper for some.
