I have a strange one that I can't figure out.

I have a laptop, a ThinkPad R31 (2656-E5U) that freezes when it's connected
to an external monitor, which is a Dell 19" LCD, model E197FP.

Supposedly, the ThinkPad uses the Intel 830M video chipset. I have re-
installed the video driver, but that didn't help with the freezing.

This just makes no sense. When I don't hook up the monitor, the notebook is
fine. As soon as I connect the monitor, it freezes up within five minutes.
I have tried using the LCD as just the primary display, as well as Desktop
extension.

I hope someone has some ideas... Thank you.

Have you installed the correct/latest driver for your monitor.

Oh yes, monitors do have drivers. If you haven't, windows will attempt to
use a generic driver which sometimes gives problems which may be just as you
describe.
