I recently purchased a ThinkPad X41. Loaded it up with 1.5MB of Ram.

Question: If using in conjunction with it's docking station, is there any
reason why it could not be used as a desktop replacement for all day usage
for normal business stuff like email, ms office applications, etc.? My
concern is overheating issues if leaving on all day at the office.

Thanks for any advice or real world usage experience.

T Jones

No - no laptop has any difficulty being on, and leaving a laptop on does
not heat it up any more in 5 minutes than in 5 hours; wattage is a RATE
and it does not "add up" with time. Laptops are not designed for
occasional use (I sincerely hope never to meet one if there is one like
that), but for USE.

You may want to take the battery out when on A/C, or use a special old
worthless battery in that setting (I do).

But I don't see why yu want to "replace" a desktop in the computing
sense - you can perfectly well log in to the desktop through the laptop
and do heavy computing on the desktop while your gui is handled by the
laptop. This is the way I have worked for ten years at least!

Peter,

I plan to use the laptop to log on through "remote desktop" to our corporate
server, run business applications for the most part throught there, and do
my personnel computing on the laptop....

Personal. Then I think the word "replacement" is a bit of a misnomer
to describe what you want to do (to your desktop). Using a laptop as a
better keyboard and screen is quite the fine thing to do (hey! I do
that! I wouldn't type any other way).

With what type of jobs can you do that?

I often find that the heaviest stuff I do is occasional
graphics work. Manipulating large map pictures, actually.
I don't think running the graphics program on my
desktop, from a laptop, would give me access to
the desktops better resources? Or would it?
