I'm getting the error "The security certificate on the server is invalid"
when I try to get my Treo 700w with Windows Mobile 5.0 to connect to
Exchange 2003 SP2 on my SBS server.

I've been googling around for the last couple of hours, and appears that the
phone doesn't like the fact that the server uses a self-issued SSL
certificate. Contrary to some advice I've seen, it doesn't appear that
Windows Mobile lets you turn certificate checking off.

So I could to buy a certificate someplace, but it looks like the only
authorities that are trusted by the Treo by default are really expensive.
GoDaddy.com is cheaper, but it's not on the list on the phone.

An alternative is to get the phone to trust my self-issued certificate, and
I found some vague and confusing instructions in the forums about exporting
to a .cer file on the server and then somehow installing this on the phone.
I think I've managed to export the certificate from IIS in a .pfx format,
though.

Does anyone have any simple, cookbook-like instructions for solving this
problem? Three hours of reading the forums is enough.

Hi,
You could just copy the cert to the 700w and install it there. Then you
will be able to sync.

How?

I managed to get the pfx file onto the 700w, but I have no idea how to
install it.

I copied the .cer file (DER encoded, not Base-64) using my USB and
activesync. I've also used the IR port on my laptop to transfer necessary
files. The Treo will not recognize pfx encoding.
