The right graphics card ? ScottW 04-11-2007

I'm going to be setting up a PC based DVR with XP MC2005 with the following:
IBM NetVista 2.53ghz, 2gig ram
Sony Wega 55" LCD TV (inputs Svideo or HDMI)
Sony ES 5.1 receiver (inputs Svideo, fiber )
DirectTv non HD sat box
We currently watch local channels via HD over the air with the turner built
into the TV, and the rest DirectTv non hd channels.

Recording of over air HD is not required but nice to have if an option
presented itself.

So that's the plan and what I've got, now what do I need ?

I was thinking of going with the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR250 for my capture card.
Is it supported by MC2005 ? Good choice ?
Next I'l be needing to upgrade my outbound video which will be connected to
the Sony. Here I really don't have a clue. I suppose I could look for a
card with HDMI and go directly to the tv and i can take the audio there as
well but then I'm bypassing the 5.1 receiver. If I take the audio to the
receiver and the video to the tv I'm worried about it not being in sync, but
if I went Svideo I could take both to the receiver. The DirectTv and Xbox
are both hooked up via Svideo and they look good. Thoughts and suggestions
please !

Forgot to mention the video is an AGP slot.
What about a DIAMOND X1650AGP512SB Radeon X1650PRO 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP
4X/8X Video Card for the video out card.

The X1650 Pro is fully capable of processin HDTV video from an OTA tuner. I
might suggest the Hauppauge 1600 since it has both an analog tuner and and
an OTA digital tuner. If you plan on having two displays connected to your
graphics card then a card with 256MB is recommended for HDTV program
processing.
ATI may be announcing its new X2xxx cards shortly since they were shown at
the CEbit Fair in Germany last month and AFAIK NVIDIA plans to announce
additiaonal new genration 8xxx cards next week.

You realy want to have the HD channels in the MCE guide, trust me it the
best way to go.

Good tuner but a little expensive for little if any added picture quality.
Look for pricing on the HVR-1600 or Avermedia M780 tuners that will give you
a analog and digital tuner on one card that work in MCE.

You can use a card with DVI out useing a DVI to HDMI cable or if you prefer
a HDMI out but there is such a limited number of video cards with HDMI,
either way the resulting quality will be the same. As to audio sync I've
never had a problem with this using DVI out to the set and the audio to a
reciever. However there are complains of some HD sets being hooked up from a
STB with the audio going to a reciever being out of sync, something that
doesn't seem to be a common problem with a media PCs.
