I'm helping someone who has an HP iPAQ rz1700 series running Windows Mobile
2003 second edition move from Windows XP and Office 2003 to Windows Vista and
Office 2007.
My friend currently synchronises his Outlook appointments, tasks and
contacts and performs an incremental backup of the device to his XP machine
using Active Sync.
Can anyone advise whether he will be able to do the same on his Vista
machine and how?

The Outlook sync will be fine, but he'll lose the ability to backup the
device to the PC. Windows Mobile Device Center (the Vista replacement for
XP's Activesync) doesn't have a backup function. iPaqs typically come with
a backup-to-storage-card utility on board, so he could use that and
periodically manually copy the backup files from the device to the PC for
insurance. (That's what I've always done- Activesync backups were always
slow and flakey so I never used them.)
FWIW, WM2003SE was the last OS to backup with Activesync. WM5 and newer
devices lost that ability, even with XP and Activesync, so I suspect that's
why the "legacy" Activesync backup function didn't make it into WMDC.

Please log in for more thread options Hi,
Yes, he can perform the same under Vista and Outlook 2007. You will need to
install Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) instead of ActiveSync on the
Vista PC. While setting up a partnership, you can select the information
types that you want to synchronize with Outlook 2007. Just note that the
Backup/Restore feature will appear under the following menu structure:

Mobile Device Setting > More > Backup and Restore
Note that this option comes up only when WM 2003 device is connected. This
option doesn't show up when WM 5.0 or higher version device is connected.
