Hi

I would really like to be able to synchronize my windows mobile 5.0 device
when I use the GuestOnly = 1 registry setting.
When I cancel the “setup partnership” wizard and then get Guest partnership
I am able to sync with my exchange server. But when I set the GuestOnly
registry setting, all synchronization through USB cable stops. The device
does have access to the internet through the USB cable (removed all
connection settings from the device just to be sure that it didn’t use GPRS).

My case is this:
We are about to deploy Windows mobile devices to our users and we use
MobileManager to send configurations and initial applications to the devices.
To save cost (not send several Mb of data through the GPRS network) we have
pushed ActiveSync 4.1 to the users with GuestOnly registry key set to true.
This is to reduce the complexity if the system, so when a user connect the
device to the computer with USB, it charges the device, and it synchronizes
with the exchange server through the USB cable (internet) without the “setup
partnership” wizard.

There is apparently a difference between the GuestOnly registry key, and
canceling the setup partnership wizard, does anyone have a workaround for
this?

Hi,
GuestOnly is a hold over from ActiveSync 3.x. The device will not have
access throug the USB cable to the internet. This is by design.

A workaround is to setup a partnership for the device and choose not to
synchronize anything. Another option is to use Wi-Fi to sync in the office
and not use ActiveSync at all. This would reduce the security risk that the
users can install applications in GuestOnly mode.

OK, but I do have access the internet through the USB cable when I use the
registry setting... just not to the exchange server. ActiveSync gui on the
device is non responsive when I try to sync, but I am able to surf the net
with IE on the device.

When I set the GuestOnly registry setting to false, and cancel the create
partnership wizard, and with this method enter a guest partnership with the
host computer, ActiveSync works fine on the device, and I am able to sync
with the exchange server. This is what puzzled me. Apparently the GuestOnly
registry key is an unsupported key, so anything would be called a feature
and not a bug :-)

To approach my problem from a different angle, is it possible for me to
disable the users' ability to select items to synchronize with? So he/she
only can create an "empty" partnership with the host computer.

Hi,
I do not know a way to administer the access to select the option to sync
items in ActiveSync.

As for the ability to access the internet via the USB cable, it could be
that the user is restricted to local IPs and that the device is requesting
the internet IP for the Exchange server. You can try using nslookup on the
PC and install vxutil from www.cam.com to see what IP the Pocket PC is using
for the host name.
