Audiovox SMT5600
ActiveSync 4.0

Everything was fine until I had a virtual device cradled (via DMA) for a
couple of days. Now I can't sync my physical device anymore.

When I connect the phone, I hear > babump < Windows recognizes the USB
device, the ActiveSync logo flashes green > bleep bleep < connecting...

Then the logo greys out with an [x] and I get the following message:

Synchronization error

(duh - that's immensely helpful.)

OK, I flip over to the device and start Active Sync on the phone. I see that
a server synchronization took place which means that my pass-through
connection to the Internet is working fine. But the PC synchronization is
stalled. I hit Stop. Then I hit Sync.

Syncronize with Server goes OK, but Synchronize with Windows PC returns an
error.

Unable to connect. Verify your dialup or proxy settings are correct and try
again.

Huh? I'm able to do a server sync using pass-through connection to the
Internet via my PC. It's obviously connected in order to do this. So why
can't is get synched up with ActiveSync?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi,
Did you authorize ActiveSync to access the internet through any software
firewall you have installed on the PC?

Hi Chris,

I don't have any firewall software installed. (I'm behind a hardware
firewall so its not necessary.) In any case, the device is able to get out
to the Internet via the PC and the PC is able to browse the device using
ActiveSync Explorer. So bi-directional communication must be properly
established via the USB port. The problem seems to be specifically a
synchronization problem, but unfortunately, the only diagnostics output by
ActiveSyn is the very terse message 'Synchronization error'. Not very
helpful :-(

Is there anyway to get more detailed diagnostics? Does ActiveSync generate a
logfile?

Thanks for your help,

Joe Geretz

Hi,
You can review the logs from ActiveSync however they are not easy to read.
Microsoft never disclosed the log format. So the logs are basically
useless.

Have you tried using Detect & Repair of Outlook and then reinstalled
ActiveSync?

Uninstall / Reinstall did the trick. I hope I won't have to go through this
after every time I synch with my virtual device.
