Synchronization Error - 2nd request for help

This problem started about 1 month ago. I have had my computer for 9 years,
the PDA for 3 years and have never had this problem.

Computer: 450Mhz P2, Windows XP, Microsoft Outlook

Firewall is off

PDA: HP IPAQ 5450

I sync everything but AvantGo.

I drop the PDA in the cradle, Active Sync begins, then the PDA kicks itself
out, and I get a sync error. There is no other message or error number.

Right under Connection are the words, Sychronization Error.

If I remove the PDA from the cradle, perform a soft reboot and try to
resync, Active Sync goes into an endless loop and says connecting, and the
green circle just spins and nothing else happens.

What I've tried:

Performing a soft boot of the PDA before trying to sync.

Uninstalling and reinstalling Active Sync 3.8

Uninstalling and reinstalling the USB drivers

Performing a Hard reset and reloading the PDA.

Rebooting the PC upon getting a sync error.

Following Active Sync help on-line (really useless)

Can anyone help???

The other day I performed a Windows Update.

After everything was downloaded and rebooting the machine, I dropped the
IPAQ in the cradle and I message window popped up, warning me that Active
Sync was trying to access the PC and did I want to allow the connection. I
said yes. I have not had a problem since.

This is certainly weird. I have not touched any computer settings in the
last several months, and certainly nothing to effect the performance of
active sync.

Oh well, I am shopping for a new PC, I thought I might learn something here,
but I'm still scratching my head.
