Strange issue with password authentication David Gartrell 01-18-2007

Hi There,

I'm trying to set up a 2003 Small Business Server - I'm something of a
newbie and am having a strange issue with password authentication between
the server and an XP Pro workstation. Currently I have a username set up on
the server with a blank password. Here's what's been happening:

1. If I set a username on the server to force a change of password - when I
log in on the workstation it doesn't ask me for a prompt for a new password,
even though it's set to do so on the server for my login.

2. If I change my password on the server and then try to login with this new
password it won't let me login if i use the new password on the workstation.

I'm guessing that's its just something small i'm missing but being new at
all this I can't find what it is.

Thanks in advance for your help.

David.

Hi

First of all do not use a blank password for administrator,
and check your policy settings about Password Policy

It almost sounds as though you may be confusing domain accounts
with machine local accounts (as defined on the XP client).
When you log in at the XP it is indicating the domain in the login box?

Also, SBS is something of a unique critter, so you may find that
asking in the SBS specific newsgroup is more helpful to your startup
efforts:

Actually, it sounds *exactly* like a confusion between domain and local
accounts. Are you sure you are prefixing the account name with the domain
name in the logon dialog? Hit the details button in the logon dialog and
select the domain from the third box. One entry will say something like
"(This computer)" and the other won't have anything added to it. You want the
one that does not have anything added to it.

There's really nothing wrong with a blank admin password on a machine that
is physically secure. If it is not physically secure there is all kinds of
things wrong with it. Blank passwords can't be used for network
authentication, which also means that you must have a password on the
accounts you log on to the workstation with.

** footnote:
A login when admin account password is blank is protected/restricted
in this way with XP and later and is governed by policy being enabled.
