I don't think I made myself clear. The sound works fine with the headphones,
but no sound comes at all through the laptop's built-in speakers.

When you plug in the headphones, an extra contact or contacts operates
mechanically to disable the internal speakers. This (these) contacts are not
closing properly when you unplug the headphones so the internal speakers are
not receiving a signal.

Thanks. I tried your suggestion, but still no sound over the speakers.
Obviously I have a hardware problem.

Thank you so much! I had the same problem: couldn't figure out why my
speakers were suddenly not working. When I read your message, I
realized it explained the situation perfectly. Sure enough, the
solution you suggested worked. Thank you again!

This just happened to me too. Maybe HP rolled out a crap upgrade. My
battery
also died recently after my 1 year warranty ran out. Customer
service has been
a bitch to deal with and are not being helpful at all.
I am done with HP - and I
don't just mean their laptops. Crap product
and crap customer service.
