I have an HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop, and after a year, the speakers
suddenly stopped working. I can still get sound by plugging in earphones,
but not through the speakers.

Is this likely to be a hardware problem that will require going inside the
laptop?

Any guidance welcome.

Try the speakers on another computer, this sounds like a speaker problem.

The speakers are internal to the laptop.

Sorry I spaced out and didn't realize we're in a laptop group. So try
what tc suggested.

It is likely to be a problem with the headphone jack. There is an internal
contact to disconnect the speakers when you plug in the headphones.
Sometimes plugging and unplugging the headphones several times will fix it.
Or spraying contact cleaner into the jack and exercising the jack with the
headphone plug.
If this doesn't work, you will probably have to disassemble the laptop to
access the jack.
