I have set up a turntabe via my receiver to record old vinyl records into my
computer. Everything works good but the timer on the sound recorder only
goes for 60 seconds. How do you set it to record for unlimited amount of
time? I have Windows XP Media. Am I using the proper method (sound
recorder)?

That is all that Sound recorder will record (60 sec).

You might want to try this free audio software.

thank you, that answers my question. It seem kind of a waste of effort that
they would only set it up for 60 seconds. What can you use it for?

The sound recorder will record for more than 60 seconds, but you have
to do something strange (like load a longer file into it or something -
I've forgotten exactly what, in the 10 years since I did it) to make it
do so.

Just follow CSM1's advice and the the Audacity :-)
