that there aren't many jobs for PHP people out there, but when i spoke
to certain people or developers, they tell me that that sites like
Yahoo, Google, use alot of PHP. So why is there not a demand for PHP
people as far as companies seeking employees, but people tell me that
PHP drives many websites out there. Interesting.

There certainly are - compare PHP to something like Python or Ruby

Anything the size of Yahoo or Google uses a lot of _anything_ that
they use. This doesn't mean that they're particularly focussed on it.
Google, for instance, is famously a big Python user.

> So why is there not a demand for PHP

Because you're looking on job boards, and job boards are largely
agencies pimping for suits. Suits who probably use .NET or Java more
than they use the "small scale" or "obscure" stuff. PHP is around, but
it's recruited more by word of mouth than through the agencies.

Many of the "web designer" roles you do see through this route are at
the all-rounder end of things within a non-web business, so they look
for a bizarre skillset that will mix Photoshop, PHP, Visual Basic and
Sarbanes-Oxley compliance. You can imagine how well _that_ mixture
works out, especially when they're offering burger-flipping money.

Do you think PHP is as dominant as it alwys was in terms of new sites or
major site upgrades?

I get the impression that the MS platforms - ASP and ASP.NET - were slow
getting off the blocks a few years ago but have become far more widespread
in recent times.

There is comparatively little ASP and ASP.NET development. Some, to be
sure. But Windows stinks as a web server, and ASP and ASP.NET are even
worse. The main users are big companies whose upper management has been
brainwashed to believe MS is the last word in everything computers.

The majority of the world knows better. They use PHP, Perl, Python and
others.

Jerry,
What is the best book out there to learn PHP? Or any good material
online whether video or text to learn PHP? Thanks for the reply.
