Hello. I'm about to use Windows Desktop Search on a enterprise environment,
and have the following questions:

- Can WDS search and index network drives ?
- Can WDS process several simultaneous queries trough the API ?
- What is best to increase the indexing speed, add more RAM, or use a
dual-processor CPU ??
- Is it possible to start the indexing process at some scheduled times
(using Windows Task Manager), instead of indexing in the background ?
- Is out there a comparison between WDS and some other enterprise/expensive
Desktop Search softwares like those from ISYS (www.isys-search.com) or
dtSearch (www.dtsearch.com) ? It does not seems to justify the $$ difference
... or WDS is not suitable for an enterprise environment, and I can't find
why ???

Thank you very much.

Hi,

- WDS can index network drives (although the network overheads has not
been documented or mentioned by the WDS developers)
- I'm not sure about this one. But if you mean simultaneous as in
kind:email OR kind:picture, then yes it can.
- If you want to increase the indexing 'speed', a dual-processor CPU
will ofcourse do the job. However that is not necessary for just a
search indexing service. You can tell WDS when you want it to index and
when not to index.
- I believe this is possible with schedule tasks feature in Windows,
but haven't investigated it yet.
- There is a comparison (?) but it depends on what your using Desktop
Search for. Is it mission critical and do you need the specialised
functions from the expensive software? Or can you do everything you
need to do with the free consumer Desktop search software?
- WDS does have an enterprise version. But the enterprise integration
is not as great as its been hyped to be.
