Recently I read about the search feature of Macintosh OS X 10.4 ("Tiger"),
called Spotlight. I'm a Microsoft Windows user and I haven't owned a
Macintosh in years. But the feature of Spotlight called "Smart Folders"
sounds interesting to me. It didn't previously occur to me that this would
be a feature included in a desktop search tool. But now that I've seen
people making that association, I'm wondering if I can get this "Smart
Folder" functionality by downloading a desktop search tool for Windows XP.
Is there a "smart folders" feature included in the MSN desktop search tool?

For the most part "Smart Folders" are simply saved queries that get
re-executed when you open the folder. Windows Desktop Search (WDS) supports
saving of queries by letting you add a query to your favorites list the same
way you'd add a web page to your favorites list.

I said for the most part because some "Smart Folder" implementations also
provide a way of notifying the user when new content matching the folders
associated query becomes available. WDS doesn't currently support this
notification behaviour which is why we don't claim to have "Smart Folders".
We do support saved queries though. :)

Hi Steve,

Is there a shortcut for running these 'saved queries'? Or the only option is
to use drop down menu for favorites?

Thanks

The "saved queries" are just regular explorer shortcuts. If you drag the
desktop search icon from the address bar of the results view, you can put it
on your desktop or in any folder. You can also add it to your favorites and
then drag and drop it from there. Any time you run the .lnk file it will run
the query, giving you a basic "smart folders" kind of experience. The main
advantage to smart folders (or outlook's seach folders) is that they can give
you a count of new/changed items, or turn bold, etc.
