Dell c-500 laptop, using stand by or just by closing I like the fast
boot up but when in stand by it seems to make a very lite humming sound
and it doesnt do this in the shut down mode. Cant anyone tell me what
this is? Is stand by ok to use for short periods of time, even few
days? Mant thanks...

The only problem is the annoyance factor. The humming is caused by bad
design/iffy electronics but otherwise nothing will wear out
prematurely to be concerned.

I bet the humming is there all the time, you don't notice it when the
notebook is on, drawn by the fan and what not.

Suspend turns off more stuff than standby so hopefully the humming
circuitry is powered down during this mode.
