I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 with Window XP Professional. Also I have the
Samsung Blackjack with what I believe comes pre-loaded with Window Mobile 5
(WM5 ?). I installed the newest version of ActiveSync which I believe to be
ActiveSync 4.5

Basically, I can't figure out for the life of me how to connect my phone and
my pc through ActiveSync via Bluetooth. When I access ActiveSync in my phone i
push the menu button and select "Connect via Bluetooth" and the it come back
saying to me:

Info
---------------------------------------------------------------
Cannot find an existing Bluetooth
partnership with a PC that supports
ActiveSync. would you like to set up a
partnership now?

So then I'll click "Yes", and the phone prompts me to choose a device. I
scroll down and select Bane-o Laptop (name of my Computer). It then asks me
for "Services"; so I sellect "Serial Port" and then select Done. But then the
phone still won't connect so I am at loss as what to do.

I would appreciate any help that someone could provide me with. I've put
some info of my settings below, in-case this helps anyone reading this.

Below is the Bluetooth card and some info on it:

Dell Wireless 355 Module with Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR Technology
Manufacturer: Broadcom Corporation
Firmware Revision: 2.1.216.296

Under the "Local Services" tab in the Bluetooth Configuration window, this
is the info that I have set:

Service Name ActiveSynce
Startup Auto
Secure Connection Required
COM Port COM4

In my ActiveSync progam under Connection Settings I have the following set:

Y Show status icon in taskbar
Y Allow USB connections
Y Allow connections to one of the following:
COM4

This computer is connected to:
Automatic

Y Open ActiveSync when my device connects
N Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop

( Table: Y = checkmark in box N = no checkmark in box )

You need to get "Activesync" listed as an available service on the PC-
not "Serial Port."

In Activesync (on the PC) go into File > Connections and tick the box
that lets you choose a serial port to use and slect your BT serial port
from the drop-down list. Then on your PPC, rediscover the available
services on the PC and choose "Activesync."

Ok, I just tried what you suggested and this is what happened:

when I rediscovered the services on my PC from my Smartphone, it had only
two boxes (services) available. One of them was "Serial Port", and the other
was "Headset". When I check-marked both boxes (services) and selected the
done key on my phone, my Dell (PC) Bluetooth only recognized the Headset
service and said nothing abort the Serial Port. Also when I go back and try
to rediscover the services on my PC from my Smartphone, the box next to
"Serial Port" is checked and the box next to Headset is unchecked again. I
also tried un-pairing and re-pairing the two devices, but the result was
still the same.

So I guess my problem is how do I get my PC to realize that my Smartphone
wants to connect to the "Serial Port" service? Or I could be wrong (I
probably am) and that has nothing to do woth the real problem.

I hope this helps to futher explain my question.

You don't! It needs the (unlisted, in your case) "Activesync" service.

Stupid question- you mentioned it was a Dell- what bluetooth software
does it use? It's own (i.e. Widcomm, Toshiba, etc.), or the default
Microsoft bluetooth stack?

You might have to uninstall the BT software, and use the "add hardware"
function to let Windows find the hardware and install the Microsoft stack-
it works with Activesync whereas my installed BT software didn't.

Sorry to reply to myself, but upon re-reading my post I felt I should
make it unambigously clear that _I'm_ asking the "stupid question"- not
accusing _you _ of asking one!

Sorry if that seemed insulting- like many posts pecked quickly it sounded
better in my head than it read on screen!
