I recently bought a new laptop (Sony VGN-SZ4XWN/C). There is nothing
wrong with it, so I'm not in any immediate need of a repair manual. But
is there anywhere I could find one on the web - I have tried looking,
but so far no luck.

Your best bet is E-Bay. It probably will be cheap, but not free.
Typically you pay $5 to $15 (plus shipping) for a CD-ROM with a bunch of
service manuals on it. Do an E-Bay search for "Sony Service Manual"
(you will get a lot of non-laptop hits also). Unfortunately, these
usually don't have the manuals for the very newest models.

Thank you. I'm not sure when the Sony VGN-SZ4XWN/C was introduced, but I
doubt it is that old, so I may be out of luck for a while. But as I say,
there is no immediate need. I might at some point upgrade the 120 GB
hard drive, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. I don't
suppose it will be rocket science to remove the old one and put a new
one in.

Hi Dave,
if you only want to replace HDD you may find Sony VAIO VGN-SZ Hard Drive
Installation Guide helping.

Thank you. I will download that. I will not be doing it just yet as the
120 GB disk is nowhere near full (yet) and the machine is only a few
weeks old. But I'm sure in the future, upgrading the disk will be one
thing I will do.

I'll keep an eye out for a manual.

I once scanned a manual on a piece of HP test equipment (a time interval
counter)

http://www.g8wrb.org/useful-stuff/time/HP-5370B/

It took me several days to do and the file was 566 MB! Agilent (who are
the test equipment branch of the old HP) have a downsampled version on
their web site which I sent them some time back. But it is NOT much fun
scanning a manual, but in the case of that one, there was only one
commercial source which was well over $100, and the manual was an older
copy than the one I manged to borrow.
