Serious OWA ActiveSync Problem C.P. 06-14-2005

When trying to sync with OWA, it drops the syncing. The device will read the
contacts and calendar, but will not sync, but issues no errors. I found a KB
article listed below, which points to Antivirus but when we enable proactive
is maxes the processor, so MacAfee said go back to on access. Verizon, MS,
and NA are all pointing fingers at each other. While at TechEd another user
said he found a white paper on the web concerning this very issue, but I
have not been able to find it. Something about the folders in particular
MacAfee is scanning, and what files to avoid so on and so forth. Not being
an Exchange admin (I do the mobility and remote access) I'm not sure what to
tell the Exchange guys to adjust, and they're not likely to do so unless I
know exactly what I'm talking about (which is for the best). This is
happening on all of our Windows Mobile devices that went into production
since we made the change to AV, and any device that we reset goes into the
same pattern of unreliable syncing, if it syncs at all. Please, I'm begging
for suggestions, the CEO now has one, and isn't happy. Sound desperate
enough? Thanks in advance folks.

blame it on flaky network connection and the blame will be no longer on
you..

Does it happen only when using a mobile network?

If you place the device in a cradle will it correctly synchronise to the
Server?

It works in the cradle if you set the device to sync with the PC. It does
not sync to the server when connecting through the cradle. Unfortunately,
the wireless functionality is the drive behind getting the devices. They got
ahead of themselves with the smartphones and PDA's in that they rolled them
out without testing, and par for the course, now I have to fix it :)

What I mean with my question is if it does sync to the *server* when in the
cradle?

If the PC used to sync is in the same network as the server, you will have
to add an entry on your HOSTS file on the PC so that your Pocket PC or
Smartphone can find the Server internally on the network.

Once you do this, are you able to sync to the server when in the cradle?

If yes, then something is wrong in the connection from the mobile network to
the server. Do you have port 443 open on your firewall? Does the APN in use
allow port 443? Are you sure you're not using a WAP APN instead of an
Internet APN?

If the device can not synchronise to the server even while inside the
network, is there a software firewall on this server, preventing port 443
access? Do you have the correct certificate on the mobile device?
