Hi there.

I hope I'm not too wrong in this group. I'm absolutely new to PDAs and
all I could figure out that far is that when I'm searching for a linux
driven one, I should search for a Sharp Zaurus.

I want to develop/test/havefunwith an application to control my DSLR
camera via PDA, thus I (think I) need USB host functionality. (Or is
there a compact flash/whatever adapter that can accomplish that and is
not too expensive?) It would be even better when the OS is posix
compatible (and I guess a portable windows isn't). The PDA doesn't need
to be new, as I don't really need color display and stuff, although it
would be nice. I also probably cannot afford a new one, so I'm heading
for something in the bay.

Any ideas or places to get me started? Any experiences with that?
Can I extend a given PDA (Palm 5xx, Sharp Zaurus SL-5500G, whatever) to
gain USB-host functionality?

Regards,
Markus

Toshiba e355 is one (Windows PocketPC) - but you need a special cable. You
may or may not need special drivers. I'd think it would be easier to just
swap the SD card between devices.

That would not be possible, as the target camera uses CF. :)
No, really, the idea is to not touch the camera at all but to remote
control it via PDA.

But thanks for the name!

Markus

Acer does two. One is the N310 (sometimes listed as N320) and the other,
which has a faster processor and WiFi is called N311 (sometimes listed as
N321). They both have USB host (1.1) functionality with a standard lead via
the cradle. Apparently you can plug up to 2 devices in at once so it
supports say a keyboard and an external drive or card reader. The bad news
is that they are a 'mare to get hold of. I found one available yesterday
after 2 weeks of searching and checking stock levels and 2 failed ebay bids.
It should arrive tomorrow but in the last two weeks I've read loads of
reviews and every single one of them was positive which is a rare thing
indeed.

USB host via cradle is not the ultimate portability thing, I fear ... Hm.

Mucho thanks anyway, I'll do a (re)search into that!
