The problem was that I was over-zealous in implementing the search of .pdf
and .zip files. I had added those extensions to the list of files to 'index
as text', and it was looking at those file types hoping to see plain text in
them and because they are really binary in nature, it didn't come up with
anything to index. When I removed .pdf and .zip from that list (reverting
that list to it's default look), the two ifilter plug-ins allowed .pdfs and
..zips to be indexed correctly.
