I have a Dell Latitude C610. My hubby says he played a music CD he made
recently & the laptop froze up. He says the CD played OK. He took it
out, laptop still froze, turned it off for a few hours, & when he tried
again, nothing would work. I come home, check it out, the screen is
black, and it's still warm, & I can't turn it off. The on light is lit,
the battery light is blinking. I tried unplugging it, but it stayed on
using the battery. Nothing happens when I push the power button.
I know a black screen isn't a good sign. I'd just like to turn it off &
back on again, that works with my desktop.
What else should I try?

Was it a Sony CD he bought?
Sony installed a root kit on some CD they sell recently.
You'd better download MP3 music from P2P networks...

No, not Sony. It was a blank Fuji, & he put the music on himself. The
CD plays fine on my desktop PC, so it seems that's not the cause, was
just trying to accurately report what happened.

1. Hold down the power button for 5 seconds (full "one-thousand-one"
seconds).

2. There is almost certainly a hardware reset button, but most laptop
owners don't know about it or know where it is.

3. [last resort] with the power unplugged, pull the battery

Press and hold the power button for more than 4 seconds and it should
power down.
