We've been using MCE for about 3 or 4 years now and absolutely love it
but a few weeks ago we decided to jump into the HDTV world with a new
LCDTV. But now we realize that there are no tuner/capture cards for
inputting a HD Satellite signal to MCE and OTA is out of the question
for where we are.

Is there something out there I over looked? If not will there be such
a device for the up coming vista?

Thanks You.

Microsoft and DirecTV stated last January at the CES that they were working
on a solution based on Vista that would enable DirecTV to install a tuner
card on a PC. No details werer provided but I assume it will be with a USB
connection device that will accept a DirecTV card similiar to the Cable Card
tuner that will be available with new systems. No date for availability were
stated but it was inferrec that it would be available after the release of
Vista.
I have seen no mention of a solution for Dish.

Vista will allow CableCards, but only for brand-new computers that come with
them. Nothing for existing computers.

Currently Microsoft don't even support STANDARD DEFINITION satellite (via a
digital connection) let alone HDTV. As satellite is the leading platform in
Europe at least, this is (using typical British understatement) intensely
frustrating.

Microsoft's recommended method of doing Satellite with MCE is to connect to
a Satellite set-top box via S-Video which is an analogue connection (how
utterly quaint, and so last century).

As you can imagine, someone buying a large HDTV TV and then being expected
to use 'glorious' analogue is not best pleased. Note: the typical MCE
purchaser would be EXACTLY the sort of person who has or is buying a large
HDTV.

Unfortunately Vista will not address this issue at all (i.e. you will still
not get even standard definition satellite except via ye olde analogue
connection). Vista also adds effectively NOTHING for International
customers.

The only light (a very, very, dim light) on the horizon is a presentation
that was made at WinHec 2006 see

I found that via

l

However please note it is entitled tv BEYOND Vista, considering the pace of
Microsoft software development, most of us will likely die of old age before
we see it.

Note: Direct TV is part of the Rupert Murdoch empire, as is Sky (in Europe).
However while I also saw the Direct TV announcement of future support for
MCE, no such similar announcement has been made by Sky in Europe :-( So it
looks like International customers are getting shafted yet again.

Thanks for all your great input,
It basically sounds like our only hope is to ditch media centre and go
with a hd pvr from our provider for 700 dollars. It's a reall shame
I'll definately miss using it. It was one of the only things I thought
ms got right from day 1, well until this but it doesn't sound like
their fault.

Thanks everyone,
