Second Push-Broom Operations Phase
SMART-1
European Space Agency
23 May 2006
Report for period 17 April to 14 may 2006
The completion of the thermal analysis being done as part of the
preparation for the SMART-1 Moon impact gave the Flight Control Team a
surprise. The expected increase of temperatures during May due to the
Sun/Earth/Moon alignment was going to be higher than six months ago.
This especially affects the solar arrays at perilune when SMART-1
passes
the subsolar point with the Sun on one side and the illumination by
light reflected of the full Moon on the other, causing temperatures to
rise above 105 ??C. This would be close to the qualification limit
of the
solar arrays of 110 ??C.
After several considerations including the trend analysis of the real
time telemetry, it was decided not to take any risk and implement a
35??
offset in the solar array orientation, enough to keep it within a
reasonable range of temperatures. This was implemented on 9 May 2006
and
proved to be successful, lowering the maximum reached temperature to
around 85 ??C instead of the 96 ??C prior to the implementation
of the
offset.
Other SMART-1 operations have been nominal during this period which saw
the start of the second push-broom observations phase.
Moon impact preparation:
* Flight Dynamics strategy is completed
* The Swedish Space Corporation Analysis is completed
* The Thermal analysis and simulations are completed
* The new procedures development, testing and validation are
completed
* The SMART-1 Principal Investigator, Bernard Foing is finalizing
the coordination of the SMART-1 Moon impact and observation
campaign
The SMART-1 Ground Operations Automation System (GOAS) will be used
operationally in the second half of May, which is a first for an ESA
mission.
Future Activities
The future activities are focused on the following:
* Procedures development to raise the orbit by 90 km using the
attitude thrusters in June/July
* Finalise documentation and release of the end of mission and Moon
impact analysis
* Tone ranging test on SMART-1 with Chinese CLTC Kashi station and
with ISRO
* Start using the SMART-1 Ground Operations Automation System (S1
GOAS)
* Preparation of papers for Spaceops and IAA in Valencia
Note: The second ranging test with the Chinese station Kashi is now
confirmed for week 22.
Spacecraft Status
AOCS
The AOC subsystem has done well in the reporting period. The solar
array
off-pointing and the push-broom activities did not affect the overall
performance of the AOCS.
Electric Propulsion, Power and Thermal
Electric Propulsion
The Electric Propulsion has been off during the reporting period.
Power
The reporting period saw the start of an eclipse season. The evolution
of the eclipse duration can be seen in the plot.
Eclipse duration in hh:mm:ss (total for Umbra and Penumbra)
During the reporting period the maximum eclipse occured on 14 may and
lasted just over one hour:
Time (UT) Event
22:02:53 SMART-1 enters Moon Penumbra
22:03:23 SMART-1 enters Moon Umbra
23:02:45 SMART-1 leaves Moon Umbra
23:03:26 SMART-1 leaves Moon Penumbra
The performance of the Power Subsystem was very good. As part of the
routine analysis during the eclipse, a check of the battery cell
capacity was done, showing that there is no degradation of the cells
and
that the performance is as expected, when compared with previous
eclipses.
Thermal
The Thermal Subsystem has performed very well during the reporting
period.

Yo.
Reporting a stat.
White. Hole. Journ.
Journ.
It all started by a nice day, and a man with a hump
on his back was getting ready, and left home.
The car went under beautiful trees.
A Taxi took him to a port. There he boarded on a boat,
a large yaht, with other people with humps boarding.
The yaht took off, and there was a party.
An Elvis impersonator with a hump on his back sang in the bar.
Hunchbacks drank, smoked cigars, watched the water,
and talked happily.
The party went on, and they arrived to an island. Like fantasy
island, they were awaited by two men, a tall and a short man
in suits.
They were taken with a bus, and headed toward a small airport.
There one of those newest planes awaited them, a plane which
had many small windows in the front. They boarded, and
took seats.
"Welcome to the journey through a white hole. As promised,
we will be heading toward a secret space station, which will
take us with above light speed to the center of the galaxy.
There, we will be the first humans to cross a real white hole.
Cameras will be on board the space station, recording our
entire trip. This is your last chance to change your minds
if you wish to stay, please get off now, otherwise, WELCOME
TO THE PARTY!!!!!!!."
All the hunchbacks got up, and cheered! None left.
And so, the door closed, and the craft took off, lifted into
the air, and quickly rised above the clouds.
The hunchbacks watched as they moved high above the clouds
as a rocket engine kicked in. They found the stars appear
and they were out in space.
They approached what appeared as a large space station.
Their craft connected, and they unbuckled their seat belts
and floated into this craft. On board the space station
was the personnel. Cleaning personnel, chefs, a doctor,
and the pilot and co-pilot were the last to cross into the
space station. The door closed, and the craft left back toward
Earth. Once they were all inside, moments later, gravitation
was turned on.
So 36 days later, I mentioned Tarzan a hunchback watched
as his hunchmates were kidnapped and the pilot and
co-pilot were counting diamonds, diamonds, which they
just found out were fake.
More to come in three months. (taking a writing break)

Please log in for more thread options Let's finish this stupidity. Invent fucking anything...
So he (Tarzan) is crawling and stuff, no, the jewelry
wasn't fake.
The ship headed toward the Chrystal moon after the
hunchbacks were kidnapped by the human members
of the other ship.
It landed slowly into an opening. There were people
everywhere there, working as usual, but the planet
was all made of chrystal, some regions made of white
chrystals, others carried beautiful orchestrations
of colorful chrystals.
The men and the crew left the ship, and when nobody was
looking Tarzan ran out to the halls, and boarded a subway
before anyone would notice him, him, a man dressed in a
jungle outfit, a man with a hump on his back.

Please log in for more thread options I wrote it all, and lost it. Wrote for like three hours.
But its all in my head, how he traveled a stop on the
subway as a russian man sang, and people talked
and he sang, and a few more sang, and Tarzan got off
the next stop in the last second, and entered a station
with a restaurant, and russian people talking and drinking
and he walked by, went up the stairs, saw a long hallway,
very long, with doors, then he turned around, and a
man was coming up the subway, and Tarzan asked if he
spoke english, and he did, and Tarzan asked if he knows
where are others like him, with humps on their
backs. The man said yes, he knew, out in the spaceships,
and asked Tarzan to follow him. They walked and then
a man told him to follow and stepped and disappeared
through a wall, and Tarzan checked the wall and his
hand just moved through. And he stepped through,
and the man dressed Tarzan up in a space suit, then
told him to sit in a chair, and just before the man
pushed a button Drakula stepped through the wall,
stood in front of Tarzan and Drakula put his index finger
in front of his lips, and whispered: shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
The button was pushed and screaming Tarzan rocketed
in the chair through a tunnel, out above the moon's surface
and up out to space, up, up, until he was closer to the
blue planet. There the chair pushed him away, and the
chair turned around and headed back to the chrystal
moon.
Tarzan was left in space. In the distance appeared spaceships,
thousands, and they came closer and closer when one
that came nearby sucked him inside.
He found himself in a cargo ship, carrying tens of thousands
of robo-skunks, clearly robotic skunks. Like a herd, they
moved toward him, and blew yellow fart at him, and the
yellowness filled the cargo area. They cried up like cows,
turned their backs to him, and he crawled and found a door
and exited, shut the door quickly behind him.
There sat the pilot and co-pilot, navigating the ship.
They turned around and saw him.
Tarzan jumped at them, and they faught and rolled
around, they were punching him in his astronaut outfit.
He was clumsy trying to raise his heavy boots, and
one of them grabbed a stick and hit Tarzan on the
back and he fainted, and there was a hole on the
back of his suit.
(this is the part where people realize this is a bad film,
and some leave)
Tarzan opened his eyes. He was laying in grass.
He saw a beautiful girl. He stood up. He was in red shorts
and a T-shirt. She stood there quietly, the wind was blowing
her hair and dress. She reached her hand out, and showed
the way. Tarzan was looking around, didn't know if he died
and if this was heaven. She held his hand, and began
walking. They walked on a path. The girl pointed up toward
a mountain. Tarzan looked up, and they continued walking
up along the path. They walked and walked.
As they reached the top eventually, an alien spaceship
appeared. Tarzan got scared as the spaceship got close,
and he pulled on the girl's hands as he tried to hide. The
girl refused, she stood there. Tarzan began running. He ran
and ran, but the spaceship came closer, and released some
balls of light, which like a bee hive followed him and entered
his body. Tarzan shot out a lot of sparks, then moved on,
and kept on running along a path heading down the other
side of the mountain. Tarzan walked and walked, and he
shot static out of his body. Then at one point, the light balls
left his body, flew up into the air, and disappeared. Tarzan
noticed that his hump was gone.
The girl appeared, smiling. She reached out her hand. Tarzan
held her hand, and they walked along the path. Lightning and
thunder, and rain started falling. They started running. Tarzan
had red shorts, a white T-shirt and sport shoes on. They ran
and arrived to a tent. The girl told him to follow and come inside.
Tarzan removed his muddy shoes, and stepped in.
She had towels and clothes for him, and they both changed,
standing to the back of each other.
Tarzan had a sweater on, and was touching his back.
The girl looked outside, and zipped the tent close.
Girl: "We will stay here for the night."
"I need to find my friends." - Tarzan replied.
The girl placed her index finger on her lips and whispered:
"Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh."
They were about to lay down as she moved close to him,
holding his hands, the zipper on the tent opened. They both
sat up to the back of the tent. Drakula appeared, placed
his index finger on his lips, and whispered:
"Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh". Tarzan and the girl dropped
to sleep.
Tarzan found himself back in an astronaut suit, amongst
the robo-skunks out in a spaceship. The skunks were nice to
him, like cats they purred and were friendly to him.

Please log in for more thread options Tarzan opened the door slowly, looked inside the cockpit,
and saw that the captain and co-pilot were on the floor,
tied up.
He removed the tapes from their mouths, and asked
what was going on.
Captain: "We don't know."
Co-pilot: "Where is your hump?"
Both the captain and the co-pilots had humps on their backs.
Tarzan: "I, I, I don't, I, it its gone. Tell me what's going on!"
Co-pilot: "We just passed out I guess, and found ourselves
between those skunks. We got here like you did."
Tarzan: "Drakula must have tied you up."
Pilot and co-pilot: "Drakula?"
--
Down on the blue planet Drakula walked into an outdoor concert
which was about to begin. Musicians were testing their musical
instruments.
The maestro raised his stick, and the musicians silenced.
Drakula sat down, and whispered to the vampire's ear next to
him: "We are going to save some humans today."
The music began. They were playing Beethoven's KlavierKonziert
#3. (black and white screen)
The vampires were listening to the concert. They were dressed
in ancient outfits, some as kings. They were sitting majestically,
but not coldly, listening to the music... The musicians were also
vampires and were playing very passionately.
The girl was there from the tent as well, sitting and listening.
--
As the concert went on, the group of hunchbacks were taken inside
a building. They were chained in a line and were beaten by
guards. Some building, resembling a fascist government.
The hunchbacks stood on a hall, and watched as someone was
in a room, seemingly dictating a letter to some secretary.
She kept sneezing, and blowing her nose in a napkin.
The man in the room had a stick and smacked her, and
she typed on, and sneezed on her shoulder, then wiped
her face and nose into her shoulder (leaving a shiny mark
on her black blouse). She kept typing and he walked up
and down the room and was dictating a letter.
