Hi
I have some SEO (i.e. PageRank) questions:
One of my clients is a golf course website in Scotland.
1. If my client website were to 'swap links' with 'almost every other
golf course website in Scotland' - (of which there must be say 200 or
so golf courses) would this:
a) Give my client website an increased competitive SEO advantage over
the other clubs? (most of whom presumably wouldn't have bothered) OR
b) Get my client hammered by Google for setting up a 'link farm' ? (!)
2. Is it better when swapping links to deep link or link to the home
page.
And is there any advantage of doing so asymmetrically - i.e. it is
better
for our site if we to deep link, but have the other sites link to
our home page?
3. If ALL golf courses were to link to all golf courses, would that
help all their PageRanks ?
4. Do the links need to be in the top half of the page?
5. Is there a maximum number of links allowed on one page?
- Any advice appreciated!

If the links are natural, then there should not be a problem, for
example:
XYZ Golf Course links to ABC Golf Ball Company and vice versa
XYZ Golf Course links to DEF Golf Shoe Company and vice versa
XYZ Golf Course links to 123 Golf Course in the US and vice versa
XYZ Golf Course is in a group of courses, and links to the other members
of the group and vice versa.
Those are the kind of links that are helpful for the user. Where can I
get golf balls? Where can I get golf shoes? Where can I play in the US?
Where can I play golf with my new ball and shoes? Where can I play golf
when I'm on vacation in the US? There is nothing available at XYZ today,
where can I go to play golf today?

The links need to be where the user can easily find them. Regardless of
SEO, you really are there for humans, search engines don't play golf, do
they?

Whatever is not going to overwhelm a user. If you have a directory of
1000 members, you are not going to print 1000 members on one page, are
you?

HTH and please fix your signature. Two dashes, a space and a carriage
return. Conforming news clients will strip the signature when replying.

I'm not completely sure that I follow all that.
Am I allowed to give you a link to the page in question? (And perhaps
we might have am more meaningful discussion...)

You are. Indeed it would be very helpful if you did.

What do yo mean by "natural" in this context?
Are short tables allowed or punished by PageRank?

Yes but again, is it helpful to have the info tabulated into lists?
What density of links vs. copy is ideal?

This is a discussion about SEO. I am aware of what humans like me
want.
The question is: what can we do to compromise between the two to get
the best of both worlds?

In some instances yes, a list of 1000 members would be perfectly
acceptable to me in this age of broadband. Why ever not?

.
Did you write this or did the system?
Is this something I can get groups.google.com to do for me?
