I have a Toshiba Portege m205 s810 tablet pc. I need to restore the
Windows XP os which I
do have the original Recovery and Applications dvd. I also have the
external usb cd/dvd model
PA3352u-1cd2. According to the instructions I update the BIOS to 1.80
so the system could
boot off the usb cd. Well its not working!!!! Is there something magic
to restore using the "Recovery and Applications" dvd??? According to
the Toshiba website and manuals this is the only disc you need to
restore your system. I am at the end of my ropes with this.
Any help would be nice
phillip

Have you enabled USB CD booting in the BIOS *and* given it priority over the
hard disk boot? Depending on the BIOS, the option may only be available
while the USB CD is actually connected.

The info below may apply in your case. Per Toshiba if you have one of
the "flawed firmware" drives the only solution is to replace it.
Hopefully you're still under warranty.

Portege M200: Won't boot from bootable CD in Toshiba external USB CD
drive

Document ID:                 98081211
Posted Date:                 09/27/04
Last Updated:                 09/27/04
Operating System:                 N/A
Category:                 CD, USB
Distribution:                 US ASP
Applicable Models:                 Portege M200
Use of any software made available for download from this system
constitutes your acceptance of the Export Control Terms and the terms
in the Toshiba end-user license agreement both of which you can view
before downloading any such software.

Issue

The Portege M200 will not boot from bootable CDs in some units of the
Toshiba PA3352U-1CD2 external CD-ROM drive, with original firmware.
Instead, it will boot from the next available boot device.

Resolution

Toshiba PA3352U-1CD2 external CD-ROM drives with serial numbers prior
to 4181605001 require a firmware update to enable booting. Since the
firmware cannot be updated in the field, the drive must be replaced.
