I have foolishly defined an index field or megaproportions. All of my C
drive. How do I unselect and restore to the default configuration? I want to
be able to find some files on disc, for instance when I'm looking for DLLs
or drivers, but how do I define the indexing with a little more stringent
parameters?

The default scope is basically C:\Documents and Settings {with a couple of
exceptions}. In the Indexing Options Control Panel -> Advanced there's a
Restore Defaults button.
