I have an IBM A20m, 15" LCD displaying 1024 x 768, running Windows 98SE.

The upper half backlight of the LCD is out. So...

I purchased two complete display assemblies on eBay (got an exceptional
price). They both look like brand new. I installed one (I just replaced the
complete assembly), started the machine and the display did not fill the
screen. It is clear, but the is a black margin all around the active area of
the screen.

I checked the settings, and they were unchanged at 1024 x 768. I tried
'screen expansion', function+F8, and that had no effect in Windows.

What can I do to solve this (shrunken) display problem?

If I disassemble the new 'lid', and my original 'lid', and then swap just
the LCD panels, would that solve the display size problem? And would the
connections in the lid be compatible?

The new assembly even had the same flat cable and screw connector .

The second IBM assembly that I bought, looks the same, (15"), but has a
slightly different flat cable connector (no screws). I tried it anyway. The
screen lit up, but didn't display anything.

The first display that I purchased is also a 15" IBM assembly, but it has
one additional hinge on the case (that my original assembly does not have or
need), so I know that this new assembly was not exactly for my machine. I
did not disassemble the lid, but I could. I'm sure that I can remove the
hinge, if I disassemble the lid.

Can I make this display work right?

Thanks.

-Dennis

There was no choice higher than 1024 x 768.

Highly unlikely. Sounds like the displays you purchased are the wrong
resolution for your A20m, the black box around the desktop on the one that
worked is indicative of running an XGA output to an SXGA+ display.

I suspect you bought a lid with an LCD panel that has a different
resolution. The solution may be as simple as changing the resolution to
a value above 1024x768 (probably 1280x1024).
