As I write this, my new Dell Axim X51v is charging and I'm getting ready for
its initial setup and use. I had assumed there would be something in my
documentation about installing Activesync when previous version exists but
I find nothing about it.

So, the question is, do/should I remove all reference to Activesync 3.8 and
the partnership to my Axim X5 before I install AS 4.1 or can/will the two
versions and two pda's co-exist?

Thanks,
Tim

Hi Tim,

You cannot have two versions of ActiveSync on the same computer. Since you
have a Windows Mobile 5 device, you will need to install 4.1. So you can
install AS 4.1 over AS 3.8. Once installed, you will need to setup the
partnership for both devices.

You need to note a few things. Your older device should work well under AS
4.1, except that you won't be able to use WiFi sync (if you have been using
this feature). This feature is not provided in AS 4.1 due to security
reasons. If you are using a firewall application, you will need to open a
few ports to enable ActiveSync to communicate successfully with your device.

Thanks for the help but, so far, no luck. I'm stuck on the window with the
green circle and the prompt "connecting" but nothing happens. I'm on hold
with Dell but as it's been ten minutes all ready, I thought I'd post here
again just in case someone has an idea. I've added the proper programs for
Zone Alarm, at least according to the web site's help section.

I didn't get a chance to setup new partnerships. I

Hi Tim

I've had similar probs, I have read on newsgroups that AS4.1 should be a
fresh install. You should first remove 3.8 completly, then delete the
folder manually, since it does not remove the old DLL's. Then you should
install 4.1 from scratch.

thanks for the suggestion. I tried it but it was still not connecting. As
you can see in the next post, my next step was to disable Zone Alarm and
that solved the problem. Now, the trick is, to figure out how to make Zone
Alarm work AND still use the Axim. For the time being, I've disable ZA and
am using Microsoft's Firewall.
