Very ecological of you. Why not, instead, switch the screen off whilst
you are writing? You only need it on whilst reading, after all.

If you typically spend most of your time writing rather than reading,
then you will be able to save much more power than by just illuminating
half the screen, which you probably won't be looking at anyway..

sometimes my fingers write other stuff then my brain expected... så, I like
to check if my body is in cooperation :) and text is understandable
before I move on...

Does black showing pixels use any power ?

No. The fluorescent tubes that illuminate the display are always
on, even if you don't use the full display resolution. You can lower
the brightness to save power, but that is pretty much it for saving
power while actually using the display.
If you're trying to extend your battery life, set your power
management settings to their most aggressive. Performance will stink,
but you should get a bit more time. You could also check for a battery
for your model that offers more power, or see if your model offers an
option to add another battery; lots of laptops have such options.

Long battery time is a kind of freedom of my liking.

When just writing in a simple editor the hole screen isn't needed. Then it
would be smart to shut of margins at both left and right. Or all around.
