I don't know why you surmise that Atheists hate the Star of
Bethlehem. I am perfectly happy with the idea that something
noteworthy was observed around zero BC/AD. Of the many possible
explanations my favourite is the triple conjunction between Jupiter
and Saturn when they passed and re-passed each other around 6 BC.
This was doubtless viewed as a significant Astrological event (note:
astrological, not astronomical). The "Wise Men" were quite probably
latter day astrologers and saw significance in this triple conjunction
and predicted an important happening in the near future. The
religious people were able to adapt the "Wise Men's" predictions to
boost their own story.
