Some people like myphp others bbphp however, I like bbpress its
powered by wordpress and although not even at version 1.0 yet, it is
light and I like it. However, it is not your traditional forum look.
I have a basic set up going here http://peopleandlanguages.com/ but I
have a lot of design work I must do. I will link it with my wordpress
blog http://www.claritaslux.com/blog/ and my networking site
http://languagesocial.com/ (buddypress) with wordpress plug-ins.
These are all php. Please they are in the early stages of development
so they do not look great but my vote is with the wordpress-bbpress-
buddypress php freeware. But check out myphp and bbphp as these have
a more traditional look and feel.

Thank you for the good information! Is buddypress easy to set up at your
own domain and webhost? Do you have to have a php server in order for it
to work? Right now I'm just using a webhost called hostultra and using
their budget $20 a year plan. It has some cgi functionality but not sure
if it allows .php at that level?

I tried every various types of forum software, all had set up issues
except BBpress . Its very easy to set up. http://bbpress.org/download/
you download it here. It take maybe 15 minutes to set up in total,
but if your new maybe an hour. All you need is to create a database
on your server. Its very easy. Go to your control panel. mySQL or
PHP database set up something in most server control panels

Again its not the look of a normal forum, so some might not like it,
but I like it. I will change the banner to my own banner, colors etc,
and link it dynamically to my other sites with a simple wordpress
plugin, that is the top five/newest posts will appear live on my other
site so to attract visits to the forum. Having a forum is one thing,
getting visits is the whole trick.

Another reason I like bbpress is even though it does not have all the
functionality yet of some other forum software it is on a fast track
for development as it falls under the automattic umbrella.
http://automattic.com/projects/ read about it here. Matt http://ma.tt/
who invented wordpress is into light and user friendly development.

Thanks for the useful posts.
I've never been tempted to create a forum
before, but that looks ideal as a bolt on to my
directory site.
