What about re-using the carton the laptop came in? The cartons all seem to
come with supporting internal framework & seem like they would accomplish
the goals you outlined.

That is clearly the way to go IF YOU HAVE IT. Very few people keep them
however.

It's too bad there is no FAQ for this group.
EVERYONE WHO PURCHASES A NEW LAPTOP SHOULD MAKE A POINT OF KEEPING ITS
SHIPPING CONTAINER UNTIL THE LAPTOP IS DISCARDED OR DISPOSED OF. Can't
stress that enough.

Absolutely correct. I have the original packing materials for seven
notebooks, all of which are still working.
