Peculiar that you've made no system changes and are now experiencing
problems (maybe auto updates are to blame?) but I'm experiencing the
same exact issue except my issue was "out of the box." It appears
that Sygate is our problem. Symantec bought out Sygate and is now
incorporated into the Endpoint software. I do not have Endpoint but I
do have Sygate's personal firewall protection. After sifting through
all the help forums, changing connection settings, reinstalling
Activesync, and changing my firewall settings to microsoft's
recommended setting, I was not able to get passed the "retrieving
settings" message but WAS able to explore my files (which I was able
to do reguardless). I was finally able to connect after uninstalling
Sygate after reading that disabling does not completely wipe out the
affects the firewall has on your system. I would uninstall your
firewall to test if that IS your problem and if it is, I would contact
Symantec. I don't seem to have that luxury since my software is no
longer being supported (it was the free version anyway). I think I
read somewhere that WM5 and WM6 use different networking protocols so
that may be the reason one is being blocked and not the other. I
might try to find a previous version of Activesync to try but in your
case, I would say it's Symantec's job to stay current. I just picked
up this phone today and I have Endpoint at work so I'll keep you
informed when/if I find out more.
