I'd like to perform a ROM update to my HP iPAQ HW6515d.
I think everything will be wiped out: contacts, GPRS and email settings,
agenda, programs and so on = am I right?
How do I have to adjust the Active Sync (4.2 version) to reload everything
after the update?
Also, should I keep the SD card out of the PPC during the update: all my
pics and mp3s are stored there; will I be able to re-insert this card after
the update and everything will be smoothly going back to its place?
Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Hello,

There is nothing that you can do with ActiveSync with regards to a backup.
What you can do is use an application like Sprite Backup or Spb Backup and
backup you files to your SD card, update the ROM, then reload your data.

You can read a review of Spb Backup on my site at
http://www.clintonfitch.com/reviews/spb/backup-1-5/default.asp.

Keep in mind as well that in *some* cases after a ROM update, you have to
delete your ActiveSync Partnership and recreate it in order for ActiveSync
to work with your device again.

Lastly, when you update your ROM, *take your time*! This is one thing you
don't want to rush, especially if you've not done it before. :-)

Regards,

Hi Clinton, thanks for your quick reply, but quite a few questions in my
post are still unanswered: can anyone else jump in with the right answers?

1) Will my machine be wiped out with a ROM update?
2) If yes, can I use the back up file I create on the SD card?
3) Should I keep the SD card in or out during the ROM update?
4) Will my SD card be recognized with no problems after the ROM update and
the back up will be smooth?

About the Spb Backup: I don't have the space required to run it.
I'm also wondering why ActiveSync will be on no help for the reinstallation
of contacts, agenda, settings, program: what's the use of it, then?

TIA,

Steffo

Hello,

Well I messed up on my first post. I forgot the 6516 runs on WM2003 - sorry
'bout that! :-)

So you can use ActiveSync to backup and restore your device.

1. Yes, it will likely completely clear the device.
2. Yes, you should be able to use the backup file created on your SD card
if you are using ActiveSync to backup
3. I always do. There is nothing official saying you should but I just
like to be safe. :-)
4. It should be yes.

ActiveSync will allow you to restore your contacts, calendar, settings, etc
if you restore from a backup created by it. I've done it countless times on
WM2003 devices.

Hope this helps,
